is the production process eco-friendly?
Yes, we seek to make lovely jewellery inspired by nature with a minimum of ecological impact.
We do this by using recycled Silver, Bronze and Copper to make it, and package in eco-certified boxes (and inserts).
Then post in fully recyclable envelopes.
How do you collect and use the botanical samples?
Silicone moulds are made of a small sample of the tree, plant or flower. Usually collected from dropped leaves and with permission in the case of a rare tree.
The moulds can then be used again. The process is always done by hand so every piece is unique.
Tell me more about the crafting process
A silicone mould is taken from the tree, plant or flower.
Once the mould is used to produce a pendant, they are carefully dried (very carefully in the case of Bronze to avoid bubbling), sanded to a fine soft finish, then fired in a kiln.
Bronze and Copper are fired at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment and cooled slowly, to again avoid bubbling and warping.
I always say you tell Silver what to do and negociate with Bronze 😄 . You are never quite sure quite what is going to emerge from the firing tin with Bronze but we are on good terms now!
Then the fun part of polishing and adding the other chains or other settings completes the process.
What Silver do you use?
The Silver is 100% recycled and a minimum purity of 925 Sterling Silver, but most often 950 or 999 fine Silver depending on the design. A Hallmark is not required if a Silver item weighs less than 7.7g.
However I am in the process of registering with an Assay Office to have this in place for larger or higher priced items as a quality assurance measure for customers.
How do I look after my jewellery?
All metals tarnish over time and will benefit from a quick polish after wearing or exposure to the air after a while.
All Cotswold Silver Tree jewellery can be polished back to the original lustre using readily available polishing cloths made for Silver or Bronze or Copper jewellery.
Bronze and Copper tends to change colour more quickly than Silver due to the chemical composition, but keep a cloth handy to polish or enjoy the change in colour over time.
Do you take commissions?
Yes, I would be delighted to discuss making a bespoke piece for you for a special event or of special significance. Most existing moulds and shapes can be used in any combination. If it is a particular tree or plant type I will investigate to see if it is suitable.
Locations can have very special meanings for us, or maybe it is a particular tree or flower that reminds you of a loved one.
